Brian's biography

I was born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, graduating from the old
Washington Senior High School in 1983.  After graduation I joined the United States
Marine Corps, serving four years.  Upon receiving my (honorable) discharge from the
Marine Corps I enrolled at the University of South Dakota, graduating with a Bachelor
of Arts degree, Magna Cum Laude, in 1993.  During my undergraduate years, my
proudest moments came when I was chosen to join the Phi Beta Kappa honors
society, and the Phi Alpha Theta History honors society.  After a short stint in graduate
school, I enrolled in the University of South Dakota School of Law, graduating with a
Juris Doctorate degree in 1996.

After graduation I opened a law office in downtown Sioux Falls, and also began
teaching as an Adjunct Professor in the Paralegal program at National American
University - Sioux Falls campus.  As a new lawyer, I practiced primarily in the area of
criminal law, but also practiced in the areas of business formation, landlord/tenant,
contract, real estate, personal injury, family law and bankruptcy.  Over the years,
however, I have gradually began working more in the areas of family law (divorce,
custody, visitation, adoption, etc.), personal injury and consumer bankruptcy.  At
National American University I teach all legal classes and the occasional humanities
class to a wide range of students.

I am a member of the State Bar of South Dakota and am admitted to practice in the
South Dakota state courts as well as the federal District Court for the District of South
Dakota.  I am also a member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy
Attorneys.
